Into the Woods

By: Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine

Into the Woods intertwines the narratives of several classic fairy tales. The story centers on a childless baker and his wife who embark on a quest to break a witch's curse that prevents them from having children. To lift the curse, they must obtain four magical items: a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. Their journey leads them into the woods, where they encounter characters such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of the beanstalk), and Rapunzel, each pursuing their own desires. In the first act, the characters' wishes are granted, but the second act reveals the unintended consequences of their actions, challenging the notion of "happily ever after" and exploring themes of responsibility, community, and the complexities of human desires.

Arsenic and Old Lace

By: Joseph Kesselring

Arsenic and Old Lace is a dark comedy play set in the Brewster family's Brooklyn home. The story follows Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic who discovers that his sweet, elderly aunts, Abby and Martha, have been poisoning lonely old men with elderberry wine laced with arsenic. They bury the bodies in the cellar, believing they're helping the men find peace. Complicating matters, Mortimer's brother Teddy believes he's Theodore Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the basement. The situation escalates when another brother, Jonathan, a criminal who has undergone plastic surgery to change his appearance, returns home with his accomplice, Dr. Einstein. Mortimer must navigate the chaos of his family's eccentricities and criminal activities while trying to maintain his sanity. The play combines elements of farce and black comedy, highlighting the absurdity of the Brewster family's situation.
